Mindfulness/Meditation=Less Pain/Fewer Opioid Cravings
The Effects of Methadone Maintenance Therapy w/wo Mindfulness
Newswise — People suffering from opioid addiction and chronic pain may have fewer cravings and less pain if they use both mindfulness techniques and medication for opioid dependence, according to Rutgers and other researchers.
The study, published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, examined the effects of mindfulness and methadone therapy on 30 patients with opioid addiction and chronic pain. Mindfulness is the meditative practice of focusing on the present moment and accepting one’s thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations, without judgement.
The findings showed that those who received methadone and a mindfulness training-based intervention were 1.3 times better at controlling their cravings and had significantly greater improvements in pain, stress, and positive emotions, even though they were aware of more cravings than those who only received standard methadone treatment and counseling.
“Methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) has been an effective form of medication treatment for opioid use disorder,” said Associate Professor Nina Cooperman, a clinical psychologist in the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “However, nearly half of individuals on MMT continue to use opioids during treatment or relapse with six months.”
Cooperman said many of those with opioid addictions experience chronic pain, anxiety and depression while on methadone maintenance, which is why mindfulness-based, non-drug interventions are promising treatments.
The researchers said mindfulness-based interventions could help people dependent on opioids increase their self-awareness and self-control over cravings and be less reactive to emotional and physical pain. Individuals with an opioid addiction could also be taught to change their negative thoughts and savor pleasant events, which may help them to regulate their emotions and experience more enjoyment.
Be mindful & stay well!

Start smelling today!
Smelling Lots Of Wine Makes Your Brain Alzheimer’s Resistant
Go ahead and take a deep whiff of the next glass of wine you see (and the next one, and the next one). Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas found in a preliminary study that master sommeliers — people who arguably rely on their sense of smell more than anyone else — are less likely to get Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s than people who don’t soak in delicious smells for a living.
The study, which was published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, compared brain scans of 13 sommeliers and 13 people with much less interesting jobs. The researchers noticed key differences in certain areas of the sommeliers’ brains.
For one, as to be expected, sections of the sommeliers’ brains that deal with the olfactory (smell) network were thicker. Additionally, parts of the brain that deal with memory were thicker. Which makes sense if you think about it, since sommeliers are expected to remember not only how a wine tastes, but the region, history and year of that wine as well. (abbriged)

How gut bacteria influences blood sugar levels.
Septembee 16, 2019
Millions of people around the world experience serious blood sugar problems which can cause diabetes, but a world first study is revealing how gut bacteria impact the normally feel good hormone serotonin to negatively influence blood sugar levels.
Serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, is nicknamed the 'happy hormone' and is normally linked with regulating sleep, well-being and metabolism. But the gut actually produces 95 percent of it, and not in the happy form like we know about in the brain.
In a study published in the leading international journal Proceedings of the National Academicy of Sciences (PNAS) today, researchers from Flinders, SAHMRI, and McMaster University in Canada show exactly how bacteria living in the guts of mice, the microbiome, communicate with cells producing serotonin to influence blood sugar levels in the host body.
Professor Damien Keating, Head of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Flinders University and Deputy Director of the Flinders Health and Mecical Research Institute, says this study sheds light on the unanswered question about exactly how bacteria in the microbiome communicate to control glucose levels in the metabolism.
"We found that the microbiome worsens our metabolism by signalling to cells in the gut that produce serotonin. They drive up serotonin levels, which we previously showed to be increased in obese humans, and this rise in blood serotonin causes significant metabolic problems."
"The next step will be to understand exactly which bacteria do this, and how, in the hope that this could lead to new approaches to regulating blood sugar levels in humans." says Professor Keating
This study is the first to show how the microbiome, the bacteria that lives in the gut, effectively communicate with an organism to impact the hosts metabolism.
If researchers can better understand which bacteria cause the signals to produce serotonin in the gut, treatments could one day be developed to reduce blood sugar levels, and this is a first step towards better understanding this process.
"This is an exciting revelation that can one day have direct implications for human health disorders such as diabetes, but much more research like this is required in the years to come."
Be well, and prorect your gut biome that produces serotonin!

vrachirf.ru
(Heather Francis).

DrD's "Golden Milk" receipe
Dear Friends,
For the past 3 years I have been drinking a glass of my "golden milk" (GM) each day, and have recommended it to thousand of patients with amazing, according to patients, results.
Here is the DrD's "secret" recipe:
1 cup cows milk 1 (or almond milk)
Honey to taste, but no more than 1 tablespoon
1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1½ teaspoons ground turmeric powder
1 tablespoon virgin coconut oi
1/3 teaspoon of organic cayanne pepper powder
The general body of medical knowledge confirms that the key ingredients in GM:
1. Loaded With Antioxidants
2.May Help Reduce Inflammation and Joint Pain
3.May Improve Memory and Brain Function
4. Curcumin in Turmeric May Improve Mood
5. May Protect Against Heart Disease
6. May Lower Blood Sugar Levels
7. May produce Healthy, Shiny Hair
8. May Reduce Risk of Cancer
9. Have Antibacterial, Antiviral and Antifunga Properties
10. May help build and repair muscles
11. May Help Alzheimer's Patients
12. Enhance Liver and Kidney Health
13. May function as Natural Stress Reducer
14. May Reduce Signs of Aging
15. May help to loose weight
16. Ginger and Turmeric May Improve Digestion
17. Calcium and Vitamin D Contribute to Stronger Bones
In my personal opinion it also tastes great, and instantly creates the feeling of fullness, thus reduces the feelings of hunger.
Have a glass of DrD's GM on me, and be well!
